Its construction began in 1845 and was completed in 1852 under the supervision of architect Camilo de San Germán.

It was built during the presidency of Antonio López de Santa Ana, who had great contact with European culture at that time. Therefore, the buildings were developed according to the styles prevalent in Europe during that era.

Its facade is characteristic of Neoclassical style combined with indigenous elements. The interior has an oval layout, with a four-level gallery and crimson, gold, and white-colored boxes.

It was inaugurated in May 1852 with the opening performance of Bonifacio Sánchez's "Iturbide" overture.

Originally named the Gran Teatro de Iturbide, it was not until 1922 that it was renamed Teatro de la República.
