This is a park in downtown dating back to the late 18th century.
It is famous for a legend related to the city's founding. In 1531, Fernando de Tapia led his troops against the Chichimeca army on the Sangremal hill. During the battle, a shining light was observed, and in its center, suspended in the air, a cross appeared in white and red colors, with the apostle Santiago on a white horse by its side.
This miraculous apparition led to the end of the battle, and Fernando de Tapia took control of the area. In that same year, a small chapel was built.
In the 17th century, a church and the convent of Santa Cruz were constructed.
Currently, the temple houses the cross that commemorates the foundation feat and is a place full of history.
When visiting, you can enjoy typical food at one of its restaurants and find colorful crafts made by the Otomi people.
