The town preserves pre-Hispanic traditions and customs.
This is evident in the weekly Thursday market (tianguis) held in the central square, showcasing a display of color and flavor. It is a great place to immerse yourself in Zapotec culture.
The best way to get to know Zaachila is by taking a tour of its nine neighborhoods, where you can clearly see the syncretism of Zapotec and Spanish cultures. Each neighborhood, such as La Soledad, San Jacinto, San José, and El Niño, among others, has a temple with an atrium and a plaza. Most of the temples feature a sober and simple decoration.
In the main square, known as Plaza Juárez, the clock tower stands out, which has become an icon of the town, along with its characteristic kiosk and two magnificent sculptures, "El Danzante de la Pluma" (The Feather Dancer) and "El Zancudo" (The Mosquito).
While in this square, you must visit the nieve stalls, offering a great variety of flavors, including leche quemada (burnt milk), red prickly pear, and kiwi.
You can also take a walk through the streets and be amazed by the urban art, where you can also see its indigenous roots.
Zaachila is known for its black clay pottery and gastronomic richness. It has a wide variety of typical restaurants where you can savor delicious regional dishes.
Zaachila's main attraction is the archaeological zone, which reached its peak between 1100 and 1521 AD and was the last capital of the Zapotec empire, although evidence suggests that it was under the control of the Mixtecs during the conquest. The zone has been partially explored and includes a large pyramid and some mounds.
The most relevant features are Tomb 1, adorned with stucco figures representing feline heads, owls, a human figure covered with a turtle shell, and snakes, and Tomb 2, where a rich offering with gold objects and gemstones was found.
