Arquitos de Xochimilco

The arches are the remains of an aqueduct built in the mid-18th century and from then until after 1940 supplied water to the city of Oaxaca.

The aqueduct bring water down from the natural springs up north in Cerro San Felipe. The aqueduct begins in small town known as San Felipe del Agua and these arches (los arquitos) still stand. The fun thing is that the inhabitants of Oaxaca have utilized the spaces behind the arches to build various stores and houses.

Guelaguetza Auditorium

It is located northwest of the city of Oaxaca on Cerro del Fortín.

Jardín Antonia Labastida

It was known as the Plazuela de la Sangre de Cristo. Later it was known as Plazuela de Orden y Libertad until it was named Jardín Antonia Labastida.

The park is home to street food vendors and an art fair that takes place on the weekends. Here you will find colorful crafts, exceptional scale altarpieces, as well as paintings and watercolors by Oaxacan painters.

Ethnobotanical garden

The Ethnobotanical Garden represents the rich cultural and biological heritage of Mexico, specially from Oaxaca.

There are more than 7,500 plants of 472 genera. These plants come from different regions of the State, including arid and humid climates, low tropical zones, and temperate and cold mountainous areas.

It is located within the Santo Domingo Cultural Center, which occupies the historical convent constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries for Dominican friars.

Jardín Sócrates

This is a space that houses almost a dozen businesses. Which are characterized by offering traditional “nieves” and sorbets, which have gained worldwide recognition for their quality and variety of flavors.

The market was built in 1882 and it is considered a Historical Heritage.

Mercado Benito Juárez

It is the most traditional market in Oaxaca. It is an excellent option for you to purchase handicrafts, flowers, leather objects, hats, knives, as well as typical products such as mezcal, moles, quesillo, chocolate and grasshoppers.

Formerly the market was a square called Plaza del Marqués, so at the top of the entrance there is a stone that says MARQVES.

Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace)

The State Government Palace occupies the Zócalo's southern flank.

The first council built its first town hall in 1576, on the same site where the Government Palace is now located.
