In this town, the Temple of the Assumption stands out.
The Temple of the Assumption was built by the Dominicans in the 17th century.
It features one of the greatest jewels of Mexican baroque art, the chapel dedicated to the Santo Cristo de Tlacolula, famous for its miraculous powers. This incredible building is often compared to Santo Domingo in the city of Oaxaca due to its extraordinary beauty.
Inside the church, the walls are covered with paintings and altarpieces. Additionally, ornate plasterwork covers the vaults of the temple with details that denote the syncretism between indigenous art and Christian religiosity.
Its Sunday market is famous for its vibrant colors and indigenous character, where all the merchants from nearby communities come down to sell their products. Exploring this lively market is like traveling back in time and immersing yourself in the traditions of the Valleys of Oaxaca.
However, if you visit on a day other than Sunday, you can still enjoy the Municipal Market Martín González, renowned for offering delicious typical dishes of the region.
