During the colonial era, it was an important commercial center.
The Temple and Ex-Convent of Santo Domingo stands out as one of the most remarkable examples of 16th-century New Spanish architecture. The enormous construction was built partially on a pre-Hispanic platform and partially on terraces, with its roof reaching almost 25 meters high.
Although some modifications were made in the 18th century, it still preserves the original paintings and sculptures, including the main altarpiece from the 16th century created by the Sevillian painter Andrés de la Concha.
The monumental pipe organ is decorated with interlacing golden motifs and vegetal elements.
The Regional Museum of the Ex-Convent of Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán is located in what used to be the convent. It presents an interesting exhibition of sacred art and a facsimile of the Yanhuitlán codex. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.
