Its name means "on top of the water cover."
Pottery has been the most important activity in Atzompa since its foundation, dating back to the times of Monte Albán.
At the Casa de las Artesanías, you can observe the production of beautiful pieces made of natural clay, including the unique and characteristic green glazed clay.
At the top of Cerro El Bonete, remnants of the Zapotec culture are preserved. The archaeological site was a satellite city of Monte Albán and was inhabited from 250 to 900 AD. It features three ballgame courts, one of which is 45 meters long, making it the largest in the area. Other important structures on the site include the Casa de Oriente and the Casa de los Altares. From this summit, you have an unbeatable panoramic view of the Etla and Zimatlán valleys, as well as the city of Oaxaca.
Atzompa also has a community museum where some of the artifacts found in the archaeological zone are exhibited, including kitchen utensils, zoomorphic figures, and obsidian objects, among others.
However, one of the places you must visit is the Cretaceous Museum of Oaxaca, where you can admire and learn more about dinosaurs. Opening hours: Friday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs.
It is located at the foot of a hill, just 9 km from the city of Oaxaca.
