Due to its geographical location, San Juan del Río was a mandatory stop for muleteers and carts heading to the north and west of New Spain.

San Juan del Río served as a compulsory stop as it was the customs office where tariffs were collected on all kinds of merchandise.

However, when the river swelled, passage became impossible. That is why on February 9, 1710, the Spanish architect Pedro de Arrieta began its construction, which was completed in January 1711.
