This picturesque town is one of the most beautiful towns in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca.
It is known for its Friday "tianguis" (open-air market), which is one of the largest markets in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. It extends through the central square and some of the surrounding streets, where you can buy local products and, of course, the beautiful and colorful crafts of Oaxaca.
The red clay pottery, cutlery, apaxtles (traditional grinding stones), and rustic kitchen utensils stand out.
In the town, you can visit the majestic Temple and Former Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. The complex was built in various stages between the 16th and 19th centuries. In the church, you can admire colonial-era saint statues, and the monastery has been restored, recovering images and relics, including fresco-painted domes.
The Former Convent, annexed to the church, has been converted into a museum that exhibits works by Rodolfo Morales, a famous artist from this town, as well as regional crafts and art from the 16th and 17th centuries. It also includes a sound library, a library, and a collection of books by maestro Morales.
Another impressive work by Rodolfo Morales is located in the council hall of the Municipal Palace. The mural has been considered Cultural Heritage of Oaxaca and depicts everyday scenes that express the traditions of the place.
The House of Rodolfo Morales, an 18th-century mansion converted into a Cultural Center, displays some of the artist's works and has an open-air theater.
Gastronomy is another attraction, as you can indulge in one of the seven moles, chapulines (grasshoppers), or a rich chocolate with a typical bread. Moreover, the mezcal produced here is one of the best in the Valleys of Oaxaca.
