It is located northwest of the city of Oaxaca on Cerro del Fortín.

It was built especially for the presentation of the Guelaguetza festival or Los Lunes del Cerro (Mondays on the Hill), the greatest folkloric event of the Oaxacans.

The celebration takes place the 2 Mondays after the 16th of July, which coincide with the festival of the Virgin of Carmen Alto.

Its semicircular design, on a hill, recalls the ancient Greek and Roman theaters, where the slope of the land was used to arrange the stands that accommodate more than 10,000 spectators.

This outdoor auditorium, which also offers spectacular views over the city and valleys of Oaxaca. The green quarry construction gives it a typically Oaxacan character. Its exterior is equipped with green areas.
