This plaza has existed since 1529, designed by Juan Peláez de Berrio.

Located in the heart of the City of Oaxaca.

Throughout the colonial period, the plaza had no paving or sidewalks, only a marble fountain placed in 1739. This was later removed to place a first kiosk in 1857, surrounded by a small grove of trees.

In 1881 the vegetation was rearranged and on September 15, 1885, the statue of Don Benito Juárez was added in the center of the plaza, once the kiosk was removed.

By 1901 it was renovated again, placing the Art Nouveau kiosk. In 1967, health services and commercial premises were adapted under the kiosk. Beside green quarry fountines with capricious figures were later placed around the plaza.

It is surrounded by an amazing arcades, and several important colonial buildings like the Government Palace, that is why you will feel like you travel back in time when you are in the middle of this plaza. There are also pleasant restaurants and shops.

Some important celebrations are held in here like the Night of Radishes on December 23, the Independence on September 15 and Christmas Eve on December 24.
