It is one of the most important Mezcal-producing towns in the state.
There are a large number of Mezcal factories and stores, and it is known as the "World Capital of Mezcal."
You can also visit the temple of Santiago Apostol, built in the 17th century, which features a walled courtyard, main entrance, and two towers with a bell tower. The main attraction is the interior, with a marvelous main altarpiece in the Churrigueresque style, as well as several smaller baroque altars.
To the north of the municipal seat, there is an archaeological zone that has yet to be explored.
If you are interested in learning more about Mezcal, you can visit the "Ta Guiil Re'ñ" Community Museum, which means "Blood Hill." This museum has a room dedicated to Mezcal production and exhibits some archaeological pieces from the region.
Of course, in the town, you can visit some of the places where Mezcal is produced and talk to the Mezcal masters to learn more about the production process, as well as their legends and traditions. Matatlán hosts the Annual Mezcal Fair.
