Its history dates back to 1150 AD when the Zapotecs settled in the region.
It is a town dedicated to the creation of carved and painted wooden animal figures called alebrijes. It is here that the tradition of making these internationally renowned pieces began. One of the main attractions is visiting the workshops and learning about the process of carving copal wood and painting these magical creatures.
Entering an alebrijes workshop is a sensory explosion, as you can smell the wood and paint, and colors surround you. You can also learn more about obtaining natural pigments.
You can visit the Temple of San Martín and a newly discovered archaeological site dating back over 2,000 years.
In April, the Alebrije Fair is celebrated, which not only promotes alebrijes but also offers music, theater, dance events, and, of course, gastronomy.
