An ancient Zapotec settlement dating back over 2,500 years.
Its Zapotec name in the pre-Hispanic era was Zaapeche, which means "Place of many Jaguars."
Its main attraction is the black clay pottery made by the local artisans. In Coyotepec, you can find pieces of extraordinary beauty with unique designs created using carving and burnishing techniques. This tradition dates back to the pre-Hispanic era, and in some workshops, you can learn more about the production techniques.
In the main square, there is a beautiful 16th-century church and the municipal palace.
You can visit the craft market where you'll find a wide variety of black clay pieces.
Another interesting place to visit is the Museum of Popular Art, which seeks to preserve and promote the pottery tradition of the town. It has three rooms where some of the best pieces created in the town are exhibited, including award-winning pieces. Additionally, one of its rooms showcases some alebrijes (colorful Mexican folk art sculptures) made in San Martín Ticajete.
