It is a small community immersed in the Flora and Fauna Protection Area of Santa Elena Canyon, formed by the Rio Grande.
The community offers basic services such as simple hotels and some restaurants. However, its main attractions are some impressive natural beauties of the Chihuahuan Desert.
12 kilometers from the town, you can see the remains of the San Carlos de Cerro Gordo Presidio, dating back to 1773. It is the only remaining construction from the colonial era.
Just one kilometer away is the San Carlos Canyon, a true marvel that incorporates some springs that drastically change the vegetation and desert landscape. A few kilometers away is the Santa Elena Canyon, one of the most impressive landscapes in the state.
Also in the vicinity of Manuel Benavides is the Sierra Rica, the highest in the region, reaching an altitude of up to 2400 meters above sea level. Due to this altitude, there is some forested vegetation with pine and oak trees, which starkly contrasts with the desert. It is a good option for hiking enthusiasts.
We recommend not venturing into the vastness of the Chihuahuan Desert without the company of a local guide.
It is located in the northeast of the state of Chihuahua.
