It was inhabited by Mayo tribes from the beginning. In 1613, it was founded as the "Visiting Town of the Santa Cruz del Rio Mayo Mission."

The town has a picturesque kiosk in its main square.

It offers a great variety of natural attractions along the riverbanks. It has orchards and tree-lined avenues with basic infrastructure.
