Founded in 1646, its name derives from the Opata word "bacoatzi," which means "water snake" or "place surrounded by water."
It is surrounded by beautiful mountains that are ideal for hunting activities and ecotourism, with the notable presence of Cerro de San Juan and its impressive peak, reaching an altitude of 1,840 meters above sea level. In fact, the area has several Sustainable Environmental Management Units (UMAS), or ranches, where controlled hunting of certain animal species is allowed.
In the town, the Main Square and the Church of San Miguel Arcángel stand out.
In the vicinity, you will find Rancho San José del Carrizo, which offers comfortable accommodations and various ecotourism activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking.
