This city is known for its culture and history.
It was the birthplace of the Revolution due to the strike of the martyrs in 1906. It is home to Mexico's largest copper mine.
As you stroll through its steep streets, you can see various buildings that reflect the mining splendor, such as the Casa de la Cultura, the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Church, the El Ronquillo Hospital, the Municipal Palace, and the Retired Miner monument.
An important place is Casa Green, which belonged to William Green, the concessionaire of the Cananea mine in the early 20th century. It is a unique house surrounded by legends and anecdotes. With over 100 years of history, you can still see the luxury that characterized it.
The Dr. Guillermo Haro Barraza Astrophysical Observatory, considered the second most important in Latin America, is located at an altitude of 2,640 meters in the Sierra la Marquita, less than 30 minutes from the city. Visiting it is very interesting, as it houses a 2.12-meter Ritchey-Chrétien optical telescope.
The old Cananea Jail, considered a historic building, houses the Museum of Labor Struggle in Cananea. This is where the workers who led the famous Cananea Strike were imprisoned, and it currently exhibits a collection of objects related to the Revolution. Additionally, it has a room that replicates the theater-studio from which Don Pedro L. Díaz Pit, known as "the voice of the copper city," used to broadcast, as well as a room dedicated to Sonoran politician Luis Donaldo Colosio. Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.
In homage to the heroes of Cananea, there is a Mausoleum to the Martyrs of 1906.
In the surrounding area, you can visit the Sierra de Ajos Bavispe Forest Reserve, with its mountains, valleys, canyons, and dunes that are home to a great biodiversity, as well as some archaeological remains and remnants of the missions founded by Father Kino.
