Visiting Cosala is like traveling back in time, as you stroll through its narrow streets that preserve their original layout, allowing you to admire beautiful colonial monuments and sumptuous houses that blend perfectly with the natural landscapes surrounding this Magical Town.

In the colonial era, Cosala was one of the most prosperous places in Mexico, boasting over 50 mines. However, mining activity began to decline in the 20th century. Nevertheless, the town has managed to maintain its noble atmosphere and is considered the colonial jewel of the state of Sinaloa.

Cosalá boasts more than 250 historical buildings, including stunning religious edifices, mansions, and estates.

This Magical Town is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, offering a plethora of options for nature enthusiasts and adventurers.

The climate in Cosalá is mostly warm throughout the year, with an average temperature of around 30°C (86°F) during the summer months and around 18°C (64°F) during the cooler winter season.

It is located 166 km (about 2.5 hours) from Culiacán, 165 km (about 2.5 hours) from Mazatlán, and 409 km (about 5.5 hours) from Durango.

Tourist Attractions in San Ignacio

Plaza de Armas (Main Plaza)

In the heart of the historic center lies the Main Square surrounded by beautiful green areas and a charming gazebo. Among several notable buildings surrounding the square, the Temple of Santa Úrsula stands out as the patron saint of the town.

Templo de Santa Úrsula

This neoclassical-style construction was built by the Jesuits in 1730. One of its highlights is a sundial made of stone, located on one corner of the sacristy, which dates back over 200 years. The interior is very modest, and the main altar is crafted from quarry stone.

El Museo de Minería e Historia

Housed in an ancient mansion from the 18th century, this museum showcases various objects that narrate the history and legends of Cosala, particularly its mining period. 

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 hrs. Saturdays 10:00 to 17:00 hrs. Sundays 10:00 to 14:00 hrs.

Other Attractive Buildings

Other buildings worth visiting include the Temple of Santa Úrsula, the Jesuit Convent, the Franciscan Convent, the Federal Palace House, Luis Pérez Meza Alley, La Quinta Minera (representing the luxury of the mining era), the Municipal Palace, and the Chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the oldest in the locality dating back to the 17th century.

Thermal waters are located just 27 km from this mining town. Here, you can relish in nature, take horse rides, and swim in natural mineral water pools.

Experience Water Parks and Nature

The Charco Azul Water Park, part of Las Grutas México, consists of a series of pools and waterfalls. This beautiful natural environment is ideal for hiking and birdwatching. Of course, you must explore the caves and marvel at their underground landscapes, which reach depths of over 250 meters.

El Chorrito San José de las Bocas is another beautiful natural spot nearby that you can visit. It is a place with small waterfalls forming pools surrounded by lush vegetation.

El Ranchito is located 19 km away and features a beautiful river where you can swim, fish, dive, and take horse rides along its banks. Additionally, you can admire the cliffs where hundreds of macaws nest and explore the paths leading to caves and petroglyphs.

Vado Hondo Water Park is situated about 15 km from the Magical Town and offers a zip line that will take you soaring 40 meters above the ground, along with picnic areas and horse riding options. Near the water park, you can explore the waterfall area.

Another must-visit place is the Minera de Nuestra Señora Ecological Reserve, located just 12 km from the town. Here, you can also enjoy hiking, birdwatching, and camping areas.

In the surrounding areas, you can visit the José López Portillo Dam, ideal for bass and tilapia fishing. At the dam, there is a small hotel that offers catamaran rides, an ideal way to explore the reservoir.

Explore a Mining Town

For those who love exploring and learning about the region's history, a visit to the mining town of Guadalupe de los Reyes, located 35 km from the Magical Town, is a must. Here, you can observe some historical buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries as you wander through its winding streets. In the surroundings, you can ask a local guide to take you to see some petroglyphs and cave paintings.
