FERTILE LANDS, SUGAR MILLS, AND MODERNITY

The origins of the city date back to the late 19th century when a group of American immigrants, led by Benjamin Franklin Johnston, began the establishment of a significant American colony. However, it wasn't until 1903 that the sugar mill was set up. In 1916, General Miguel Flores, Governor of Sinaloa, approved the creation of the municipality of Ahorne, a town located a few kilometers from Los Mochis, and in 1935, this town became the municipal seat.

It is located 200 km from the state capital of Culiacán and only 26 km from the Bay of Topolobampo. Its name means "Place of Land Turtles" and is surrounded by extraordinarily fertile lands, considered one of the agricultural hubs of the country.

Currently, it is considered one of the most prosperous and modern cities in the country, with wide tree-lined streets, excellent infrastructure, an international airport, and a wide range of tourist services such as hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants, making it a great destination for business tourism.

Additionally, the city offers an interesting cultural life that seeks to showcase and preserve the history and traditions of the ethnic groups in the region.

It is also a place to enjoy its cuisine, which consists of seafood and cuts of meat. Excellent shrimp and scallops are highlights. One must try the shrimp, marlin, or crab machaca.

The city is also the starting point for the Copper Canyon Circuit on the famous Chepe, a train that travels from Los Mochis to the city of Chihuahua, through the Copper Canyon. The journey includes 86 tunnels, 37 bridges, and breathtaking landscapes.

Among its most important festivities, we can mention Lent, which the Mayo indigenous people celebrate in various ceremonial centers such as San Miguel Zapotitlán, Mochicahui, Ahome, and La Florida, to name a few, as well as the Day of the Navy.
