Its foundation dates back to around 1799.
In that year, a military man named Tillería brought an image of the Immaculate Conception from Spain, which was initially housed in a chapel made of straw and hedges. In 1826, it was replaced with a brick and tile structure, which served as a fortification for Mexican troops during the American and French invasions.
In the following years, it was destroyed and its current appearance, with a white facade inspired by Gothic style, was acquired in 1945. The most prominent elements on its facades are the steeples in the bell tower, turrets, and pinnacles, as well as windows with pointed arches and a gable roof with French tiles.
The interior consists of a single nave and features a modest altar.
It is located just in front of the Government Palace, crossing Plaza de Armas.
