IMPORTANT SETTLEMENT ON THE “CAMINO REAL DE TIERRA ADENTRO”
This town was founded in the second half of the 16th century and was part of the Royal Road of Tierra Adentro, so its constructions showcase the legacy of Zacatecas' mining history.
Its name derives from the surrounding wooded areas, whose wood was used in metal smelting.
It's delightful to stroll through the town with its irregular topography, typical of a mining community, while admiring its squares and beautiful gardens.
Pinos boasts unique traditions, such as the regional fair of San Matías and the Festival of Lanterns, celebrated on December 8th.
Its climate is rather desert-like, making it cool and dry. The average temperature during the summer months is around 19ºC, while in winter, it can drop to nearly 0ºC.
Located to the east of the state of Zacatecas, it is 145 km (one hour and 45 minutes) from the city of Zacatecas, 103 km (one hour and 20 minutes) from the city of San Luis Potosí, and 136 km (2 hours) from Aguascalientes.

It features an original figure of a wooden-carved Christ with human bone inlays and a hollow through which you can see its flickering heart that appears to float.
Haciendas
Since the 17th century, Pinos' development was the result of the establishment of agricultural, livestock, mezcal-producing, and mining estates. Some are now in ruins and others are still functional and open for visits.
There are mezcal-producing haciendas like Hacienda Grande, Pinos Mágico, Espíritu Santo, Trinidad Norte, or La Pendencia, dating back to the 18th century, where you can not only taste the distillate but also marvel at its history.
Another historic hacienda is San Nicolás de Quijas, known as "El Nigromante," which served as the entry point of the Royal Road of Tierra Adentro in Zacatecas.
In the La Cuadrilla neighborhood, you will also find other haciendas such as San Ramón, La Candelaria, and La Purísima, where you can observe the town's mining past.
