VICEREGAL ART AND TRADITION
It is a city that is part of the metropolitan area of the state's capital and is located just 7 km from the city of Zacatecas. In August 2010, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, specifically due to the former Apostolic College of Propaganda Fide of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 2015, due to its architectural wealth and historical significance, it was declared a Historic City, and in 2018, it was designated a Magical Town.
This territory began to be populated after the discovery of mines in Zacatecas in 1546, which led to the establishment of haciendas, ranches, and orchards. In 1677, the Franciscans founded a hospice on the lands donated by Jerónima de Castilla, who provided a chapel and land to build a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, which is why the town is named Guadalupe.
This town is also known for one of its most deeply-rooted traditions, the Morisma de Guadalupe, a profane-religious festival celebrated twice a year, on the Day of San Juan Bautista and the Day of the Virgin of the Rosary. This celebration was initiated in 1900 in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. In this unique festival, the Battle of Lepanto is represented, where the Moors fought against the Christians in 1571, with over 1000 participants in the "Campo de los Moros."
A pleasant way to explore this Magical Town is by taking the tourist tram that tours the historic center, starting at the Fray Margil de Jesús square.
It is located just 9 km (10 minutes) from the center of the city of Zacatecas, 69 km (one hour) from Fresnillo, 111 km (one hour and fifteen minutes) from the city of Aguascalientes, and 187 km (2 hours) from the city of San Luis Potosí.
