The city of Zacatecas was founded in 1546 on a steep slope of a narrow valley due to the discovery of a rich vein of silver. Precisely due to the exploitation of this metal, the city prospered and reached the height of its prosperity in the 16th and 17th centuries when became one of the principal centers of silver mining in the country.

Zacatecas has preserved numerous buildings that are distinguished by their artistic pink quarry layout. You can enjoy an atmosphere full of history just walking arround the Historic Center with its narrow streets and romantic balconies and hallways.

This city is like an open-air museum, starting with the elegant Plaza de Armas, guarded by the Government Palace and the Cathedral, one of the best examples of Mexican Churrigueresque.

Continuing along Avenida Hidalgo, you can admire imposing colonial buildings, plaza, markets and the Calderón Theater, a classic-style building. Further on, is the Church of Santo Domingo, one of the most important temples in the city, next to the Pedro Coronel Museum housed in a beautiful 18th century building. The museum displays an eclectic collection of international art that ranges from pre-Hispanic pieces to Greek and Roman art. Not far away is the Church of San Agustín with a perfect ornate carved stone doorway.

Other places worth visiting are the Rafael Coronel Museum, the Manuel Felguérez Museum of Abstract Art, the Francisco Goitia Museum, the Zacatecano Museum and of course two icons of the city, Cerro de la Bufa, which is accessed by a panoramic cable car and the Eden Mine. This distinction was granted in recognition of the architectural value and beauty of the majestic colonial buildings.
