The Villa was founded in 1605 by the missionary Father Pérez Ribas.

However, the municipality was established in 1916.

In 2010, it was recognized as a Seignorial Town of Sinaloa because it has several attractions in its historic center. Among the most important are the Church of San Antonio de Pádua, a 19th-century building; Jesse Maxwell Park; the Entrance Arch; the Community Museum; the Sindicatura of Villa de Ahome, which was a 19th-century hacienda and features a distinctive clock; the Blue House, built in 1913, which has housed a store, the municipal government, and currently a House of Culture; and the Yoreme Ceremonial Center, located in the town of La Florida, known for its celebration during Lent.

If you visit the Villa of Ahome, you should not miss the Community Museum, where archaeological pieces, maps created by the Jesuits, and various everyday objects from different periods are exhibited. It is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
