It is named in honor of the Yucatecan poet and playwright José Peón Contreras.
The building is in the French Neoclassical style and opened its doors on December 21, 1908.
For many years, it served as a cinema and recently it was renovated and regained its beauty. The performance hall, with its access through a beautiful white Carrara marble staircase, has three floors with stalls and boxes, elegantly decorated in the Rococo style.
It has three temporary exhibition halls, a restaurant, and a bookstore.
