It was inaugurated on April 23, 1956, by President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines.
Created by sculptor Rómulo Rosso, it is the only monument carved directly in stone in the world.
The spectacular monument features over 300 hand-carved figures depicting the history of Mexico, from the foundation of Tenochtitlán to the mid-20th century. It also includes references to Mayan culture, such as a Chacmool, as well as other regional elements like jaguars, a ceiba tree, and the city's coat of arms.
It is an important landmark in the city, located at the end of the iconic Paseo Montejo.
