During the 19th century, this was one of the most important points in the city.

This is because it is where the Alhóndiga and what was then a Militia Barracks were located.

In 1840, the water receiving fountain was completed, which remained in the center of the square.

To commemorate the First Centennial of Independence, the square was transformed into a garden, and a commemorative monument was built in the center, depicting a beautiful angel breaking its chains.

Adjacent to the garden is the Casa de la Cultura, an elegant neoclassical building made of pink quarry stone.
