The mine began operating in 1588.

Originally called “Mina San Eligio”, due to the extensive extraction of gold, silver, iron, bronze, lead, and zinc, it was later named “Mina del Edén”. The mine was no longer in operation due to constant flooding and its proximity to the urban area.

Starting in 1975, it was adapted as a tourist center and is currently one of the main attractions of the city. It has seven levels with narrow and inclined cavities, with walls marked by the miners.

The tour is always accompanied by a specialized guide, starting from the fourth level, just at the height of the small street that leads directly to the mine entrance. Access is through the "La Esperanza" adit, boarding a scenic train that covers a distance of 600 meters, stopping right at the entrance of the original discotheque "El Malacate" and craft shops where you can buy items made with semiprecious stones, as well as objects made of quarry.

Descending from the train, the journey continues on foot through the caverns. The lower levels flooded with green waters can be observed. There are three small hanging bridges, and in one cavity, a small altar is set up where the image of the Santo Niño de Atocha, the protector of miners, is venerated.

After the tour of the "El Grillo" adit, if you want to continue with the excitement, you can walk a few meters to reach a small viewpoint located at station number one of the cable car. This viewpoint has a retaining wall where you can observe the urban layout, as well as the most relevant buildings in the city.

At the end of the tour, as a final attraction, there is a small artificial waterfall that tourists use as a wishing well. You can also visit the Museum of Rocks and Minerals.
