UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998.

Tlacotalpan is an ancient riverside port located near the Gulf of Mexico coast, in southeastern Veracruz, right next to the Papaloapan River. Its name means "land between the waters" in Nahuatl.

Its first inhabitants were the Totonacs who settled in this territory in the 12th century. In 1518, when Pedro de Alvarado conducted his expeditions on the Papaloapan River, the first contact with the Spanish took place. Throughout the 16th century, two large estates emerged: San Juan Zapotal and La Estanzuela, which would drive the development of the place during the colonial era.

Its natural surroundings and harmonious architecture give it a special charm. The city has been able to preserve its urban layout with wide streets oriented parallel to the river, houses with extensive arcades, and bright colors such as orange, yellow, pink, blue, and red, all framed by ancient trees that adorn public and private spaces.

"The Pearl of Papaloapan," as this city is also known, is an ideal destination to savor the authentic jarocho (Veracruz) atmosphere. It is an excellent combination of colonial and Caribbean architecture. Walking along its river is a very pleasant experience as you can enjoy both the joyful atmosphere of Tlacotalpan and a beautiful panoramic view of the river.

One of the traditions that has been preserved and has given fame to this town is the celebration of the Fiesta de la Candelaria, held from January 31st to February 2nd. During the festival, the Virgin of Candelaria is paraded along the river, creating a true popular celebration where faith is intertwined with huapangos and jaraneros' traditional music.

Visitors to this picturesque city can enjoy boat rides and exquisite seafood cuisine.
