It has gained fame as it is home to the Virgin of Contadero. Due to the devotion to this image, it has become the second most important pilgrimage center in Tamaulipas.

Its name comes from the fact that it was a place where caravans coming from the center of the country towards Tampico would rest. They would stop here to take stock of the goods they were transporting on mule trains.
