TOP SIGHTS IN MATAMOROS

Casa Cross

Built in 1885, it features an architectural style reminiscent of New Orleans.

The beams, frames, doors, windows, moldings, hardwood floors, stairs, and railings were all crafted from pine wood.

Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Refugio

This cathedral has an interesting history.

In 1833, two identical towers with dome finishes were constructed. However, in 1844, a cyclone destroyed them, and due to the Mexico-US war, they couldn't be rebuilt until several years later.

Colegio de San Juan Siglo XXI

The institution opened its doors in the first third of the 20th century. It was a higher education institute that taught art and science.

The building, which has been remodeled, houses the music school where musical and cultural events are held.

Mercado Juárez

Built in 1835, it has undergone various changes due to armed conflicts and climatic issues.

In 1873, it was named in tribute to President Benito Juárez, who had passed away a year earlier.

Plaza Hidalgo (Main Plaza)

This space dates back to the early 19th century. In its early years, it was known as Plaza de Armas and later renamed after the father of the nation, Miguel Hidalgo.

Over the years, it has undergone several changes and is now surrounded by historic buildings. Its main feature is a beautiful kiosk adorned with Mexican tiles. It serves as a venue for civic and military ceremonies.

 

Teatro de la Reforma

Its construction dates back to 1861, as an attempt to replicate the Paris Opera House.

In the early 20th century, it experienced a period of great prosperity, but in 1956, it was dismantled and destroyed.
