This cathedral has an interesting history.

In 1833, two identical towers with dome finishes were constructed. However, in 1844, a cyclone destroyed them, and due to the Mexico-US war, they couldn't be rebuilt until several years later.

In the early 20th century, two identical towers of the same height were built, made of wood and tejamanil in a Franco-Creole style commonly used in New Orleans and Louisiana, similar to those of the Cathedral of St. Louis. In 1933, another cyclone knocked them down, and they were rebuilt using reinforced concrete.

The current cathedral is the result of a remodeling carried out between 1982 and 1987.

One notable feature is an exact replica of Michelangelo's Pieta, sculpted in Carrara marble from Italy. It consists of a single piece and weighs 4 tons. The magnificent work was led by Cardime Aiello using traditional chiseling and hammering techniques.
