WONDERS IN A VALLEY
According to popular belief, it is said that when God distributed wealth in the world, a basket fell in the Valle de Nombre de Dios. This is due to its fertile lands bathed by the Tunal River, its waterfalls, springs, and regions filled with lush trees.
It's a place full of stories and legends from the conquest and colonial era. It was founded in 1563 when Fray Jerónimo de Mendoza began the evangelization of the region. The indigenous people knew this Franciscan friar as Fray Cintos and attributed magical and healing powers to him. His remains are located in the Temple of San Francisco, where some believers still come to pray to him.
Among its most representative handicrafts are baskets made of willow and carrizo reeds, ropes, bags made of lechuguilla fiber, as well as wooden trays and spoons made from willow and poplar.
It is located 53 km (45 minutes) east of the city of Durango and 282 km (3 hours and 15 minutes) from Torreón.

Tourist Attractions in Nombre de Dios
Parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol
Located in front of the main square, dating back to the 19th century.
Templo de San Francisco (Temple)
This 18th-century temple is currently in ruins, but its towers and niches can still be appreciated. It replaced the first temple of Nueva Vizcaya.
Templo de Jesús Nazareno
Another interesting temple is Jesús Nazareno, built by a community of Purépecha people from Michoacán. It features beautiful fresco paintings and polychrome sculptures.
Three large Christs stand out, a huge canvas depicting the Souls of Purgatory, a sculpture of the Lord of the Tree of Life, and a strange relic: a perforated skull that belonged to a chieftain named Uraján de Luna, who died in the 17th century from a pickaxe blow.
Museo Comunitario Contalpa
Exhibits petrified fossils of prehistoric animals like mammoths, as well as tools from the pre-Hispanic period. It also displays photographs narrating the town's history.
Ex Hacienda de Juana Guerra
A few kilometers from the town, built in 1586, it still preserves the main house, mill, and the chapel of San Antonio de Padua.
Cascada El Saltito
Nearby is El Saltito waterfall, contrasting with the semi-arid landscape of huizaches and mesquites. The 20-meter-high fall can be seen almost at ground level, giving the impression of being sunken into the ground.
Río Mezquital
Further exploring its natural beauty, enjoy a walk along the banks of the Mezquital River, through a forest of old sabino trees with their distinctive exposed roots.
Los Salones
A natural setting not to be missed, where dozens of sabino trees seem to lean towards the Tunal River, creating a tunnel-like reflection due to its dark blue water, a breathtaking sight.
Ojo de Agua de los Berros
A small settlement among willows and sabino trees. Besides its beauty, it holds historical significance as the site where Friar Jerónimo de Mendoza officiated the first Catholic mass in 1555 in what would later become Nueva Vizcaya. In this area you will find several natural springs.
