Around 350 species of birds have been found in the Banderas Bay area, including land, water, and migratory birds.

Some of the best places to observe them are: Altamira, the coastal lagoons, the El Salado Estuary, the Ameca River and the various islands within the bay. One hour from Puerto Vallarta is El Tuito, a privileged place for those who like birding on beaches and jungles of unique beauty.

The Marietas Islands, declared a protected natural area, are considered the Mexican Galapagos; The islands are a real paradise with hundreds of birds such as the magnificent frigatebird, egrets, herons, seagulls, pelicans, brown booby duck and the world famous blue footed booby.

You can also explore the tropical forest and Sierra Madre mountains that surround Puerto Vallarta.

You can go up the mountain until you reach 1000 meters above sea level, where you can see many different birds that are totally different from those that can be seen on the coast, such as: gray-crowned woodpecker, painted turkey, wagler's purse-tail, tufted flycatcher, citrine trogon, tropical tyrant, green jay, magpies, military macaw, orange-fronted parakeet, silver-billed woodpecker and owls, among many others.
