In the Mayan language, Akumal means: "Place of the turtles."

This is because even today, thousands of turtles arrive on its beautiful beaches to complete their reproductive cycle.

Akumal's silky white sand beaches are protected by offshore reefs. This is a haven for divers from all over the world who have been coming here for decades.

Akumal's natural beauty has attracted visitors even before there were roads in the region, which arrived by boat, many of them coming from Cozumel. An adventurer and businessman named Pablo Bush Romero founded the city and, along with other pioneer divers, founded CEDAM, an internationally acclaimed society dedicated to community service and ecological preservation. Akumal also houses the Akumal Ecological Center (CEA), dedicated to the study of the marine ecosystem, as well as the protection and study of the biodiversity of the place, including, of course, sea turtles.

What makes Akumal a unique and fascinating place for all its visitors is its spectacular bay of transparent waters and the sweet waters of its caves and underground rivers. It is home to a close-knit community of expats who have been coming here for years and want to protect the community, flora and marine life.

There are shops, art galleries and crafts for sale to bring home a unique souvenir.

The destination offers a variety of restaurants, bars and comfortable accommodations, from cozy inns and villas to modern condominiums and excellent hotels. To the south of Akumal is the Riviera Maya Golf Club.

When you visit Akumal you should not miss some of the area's attractions such as:
