The temple is located on the site designated by the founder of the city of Monterrey, Don Diego de Montemayor, in 1596.
However, true construction did not begin until 1770, and it was completed in 1899.
Due to its long construction process, the Monterrey Cathedral presents a combination of different architectural styles that are harmoniously blended.
The temple has a large atrium enclosed by a wrought-iron railing. The main façade has two bodies and a gable, decorated with a high relief of a pair of angels holding a crown with a Franciscan emblem, and angel medallions in high relief on the sides.
It features a three-story tower, each level of which has bell towers with semi-circular arches. The smaller second tower houses a clock.
The interior of the nave is in the shape of a Latin cross, with a central nave, two side aisles, and an adjacent chapel. The sanctuary is finely decorated, and the dome and side aisles are adorned with beautiful frescoes painted by Mexican artist Angel Zárraga.
The main altar is a marvelous work with five medallions crafted in high relief silver. Below the sanctuary, there is a crypt containing the remains of the archbishops of Monterrey since 1779.
