CONDITIONS FOR SURFING IN MAZATLÁN :
This destination, located at the entrance to the Sea of Cortez, is a magnet for waves from the south and southwest. Most areas have a sandy bottom and average water temperatures are between 75-85ºF (24-29ºC) from May to November, so wetsuits are advised.
BEST SURFING SPOTS IN MAZATLÁN :
Rucos
In the surfing community, Rucos is nothing short of legendary. It’s a beach that is used almost exclusively by surfers with plenty of reliable waves.
Ideal winds are from the east. Rucos receives distant groundswells and the best swell direction is from the southwest. For the most part, it has a sandy bottom and tends to be quite dumpy, though there’s usually lots of secondary swell and whitewash for the learners.
Summer offers the optimum conditions for surfing. It is suitable for all levels. There are not many tourist because it is not very near the downtown area.
Playa Escopama
The beach is protected from those dominant SW swells that really get thumping during the summer months, that is why it is consider beginner friendly.
Located around 20 minutes’ drive north from the Golden Zone.
Surf in Mazatlán
El Camaron
With a stone and sand bottom, the break side is to the left and its breaking season is all year round.
The waves are often quite small and hard to surf. When conditions are right (generally during the spring and summer), it’s possible to catch the waves and ride them all day long.
El Camaron doesn’t have the most consistent surfing opportunities but the cliffs help to occasionally create some of the most fun surfing conditions you’ll find in the area. When conditions are perfect, it’s one of the best surf spots in Mazatlan.
It is one of the most touristic beaches and one of the most popular gathering points in the Golden Zone.
Playa Olas Altas
It is very near the heart of the Mazatlán old town.
The quality of the waves are good but not excelent. Watch out for swimmers.
Playa Bruja
Located 10 miles north of Mazatlan’s historic city, the beach is set among more ruggedly beautiful nature.
This is a dangerous place to surf but here you’ll catch some of the best waves in Mazatlan.
All skill levels are welcome to surf at Playa Bruja. Just make sure you have at least one experienced surfer around.
Playa Cerritos
Playa Cerritos is all about okay but mediocre shorebreaks that tend to pull right off the sandbanks. This is a good place for beginers but it is better to go very early in the morning.
Los Pinos
The waves travel south or southwest. The reason that surfers all flock to Los Pinos is simply its consistency, because you will have some fantastic waves that are a joy to ride all year round.
Located in the downtown area so you hardly be alone here.
Valentinos
You’ll be surprised how windy it gets here, offering consistently high-quality surfing opportunities.
This is perhaps one of the most iconic spots in Mazatlan it isn’t the most secluded spot but it is one of the most convenient. You can be up early and surfing in the beautiful sunrise.
Mármol
If you’re looking to get out of the city to surf in, then don’t overlook Marmols. The sea crashes against the jagged cliffs to create huge waves that are a joy to ride. Works best in offshore winds from the east-northeast. This exposed point break receives plenty of offshore wind, which means it can be surfed year-round.
This spot isn’t for complete beginners. It’s also important to remember that the terrain here is rugged and rocky, which can cause injuries when you leave the board.
The best thing about this surf spot in Mazatlan is its lack of crowds. Even when there are awesome waves to catch, it's not likely to be crowded.
Las Flores
This is a good surfing spot because it’s convenient, easy to find and it’s possible to catch an awesome wave.
The wave breaks off a jetty into a decent swell. It can be hard to catch but once you do, you’re off and away.
During the peak tourist season, it can get quite crowded so it’s not ideal if you’re looking for a secluded spot among nature.
Playa Barron
Located right at the mouth of the Presidio River, half an hour from Mazatlán. It is another favorite spot for surfers. One of its main characteristics are its waves in the form of perfect tubes, which break far from the shore. To reach the perfect swell you will have to swim up to 400 meters on your board, meaning that it is a challenging destination and is only for experienced surfers.
El Cañón
It has a stone bottom, it has a left break and offers good surf conditions all year round.
Playa Gaviotas
It offers easy waves suitable for beginners.
Isla de Piedra (Stone Island)
It has quality waves that offer strong emotions, especially on the breakwater.
La Escollera
It has a stone bottom, it breaks right and its breaking season is throughout the year.
Other Beaches
There are also several points with very good quality waves (mostly left) no more than an hour from Mazatlán. That is why professional surfers visit Mazatlán during the big wave season, which is from May to September.
