Puerto Escondido is one of the top ten surfing destinations in the world.
This is seasonal, since the waves also vary according to the months of the year. From January and mid-April the surf is cleaner and more playful, it is ideal for beginners.
Late April through September- is the peak surfing season in Puerto Escondido, the surf ranges from moderate to high and is ideal for experienced surfers looking to challenge the barrels of the Mexican Pipeline. This season sees 8ft-10ft+ swells with 90 to 95 percent consistency. The air and water temperature remain relatively warm throughout the season at between 82°F (28°C) and 86°F (30°C).
If you’re looking to buy your own board to get amongst the waves you’ll find plenty of surf shops in both La Punta and Zicatela.
BEST SURFING SPOTS IN PUERTO ESCONDIDO :
Zicatela
It is one of the best places for surfing and is also known as the Mexican Pipeline. With waves that sometimes reach up to 6-meter (40 feet) tall is said to have the best beach break in the world.
On this beach, the most advisable place is the break near the town.
The waves are very consistent there are right and left and from Zicatela to La Punta the bottom is sandy.
It is recommended for experienced surfers, it offers very steep and racy takeoffs in barrels moving from left to right across the beach.
Zicatela host various surf competitions like Mexpipe or World Masters Competition during August and November.
Surf in Puerto Escondido
La Punta
In La Punta you can surf at any time, while in Zicatela it is better to go in the morning. This place is perfect surf for intermediate level surfers.
In La Punta you can enjoy medium-sized waves but this spot is rocky.
At the southern end of the point break the waves are not as powerful, and it’s easier to maneuver.
The surf down here can get some pretty big rips and the left breaks can be very quick.
Carrizalillo
It is a a beautiful beach in a small bay so it gives a lot of privacy and is great surf opportunities for beginner’s to catch their first wave.
It's rocky but good for surfing when the tide comes in.
The direction is right and left and the bottom is sandy.
Chacahua
Its waves break at the tip, straight and with a sandy bottom.
The speed is moderate but frequent.
It is a place for beginners.
Punta Colorada
Its waves break perfectly and international BodyBoarding tournaments are held here.
Playa Marinera
It is an open beach with good waves but it is recommended for experts.
