The Riviera Nayarit coast has several ideal beaches for surfing at different levels and styles.
BEST SURFING SPOTS IN RIVIERA NAYARIT :
The Cove & The Lighthouse in Punta de Mita
It is high tide and shallow at low tide and some say it is the best place in the area. The waves break right. El Faro is a great wave with long rides. The best season in this place is the summer because the strong swells create better waves. The wave is best for longboard surfing. Be careful surfing at low tide and the outgoing tide as there will be exposed reef to avoid. A place for experienced surfers. Located 40 minutes from Punta de Mita.
Stinky’s
This is the premier break within walking distance of the town, it is the public beach on the east side of the boat harbor in Punta de Mita. It is a soft, longboard wave that breaks slowly. It can get very crowded but is a good place for geginners.
El Anclote
Its waves are smooth, slow and break right, excellent for beginners. This place is famous for its great conditions and favorable winds but the waves don’t get very big. Short boards are not going to catch as many waves as longboards. It is usually low tide.
La Lancha
Many waves break to the right but there are some to the left and both are great fun. The bottom is a mixture of sand and reef. At low tide, there will be some pockets of exposed reef but there are easy to avoid. Tons of locals learned to surf here and absolutely treasure the place. There are waves up and down the beach and the vibe is family-oriented. It is a place for longboard surfing and good for beginners. The place is pristine is located 40 minutes from Punta de Mita, to get here you have to walk through a mangrove forest.
Surf in Riviera Nayarit
Punta Burros
It is one of the favorite places of the destination. The wave here has a shorter left and a longer right. It is not uncommon to score rides longer than 100 meters. It is a well-shaped reef break that lines up for a long ride. Intermediates after a challenge are sure to love the waves at Punta Burros. The wave is best suited for a longboard, but you will also find shortboards. It is a spectacular beach that is perfect for camping out all day.
Located 10 minutes south of El Anclote and be ready to walk through the forest to get there.
Sayulita
It has good waves that arrive with force and the breaking waves are mostly right. It’s a long stretch of shoreline that runs northwards from Puerto Vallarta, and it’s loaded with reefs, point breaks, and some beginner-friendly beach breaks for those with the surfboard in tow. It has a very good atmosphere and is preferred by the locals. Located 20 minutes north of El Anclote.
Los Veneros or Dinosaurs
It's a classic point with a long right break. This is a place ideal for short boarding, though some longboarders still like it. It is closer to the Cruz de Huanacaxtle than it is to Punta de Mita.
Las Albercas (The Pools)
It has a fast right wave break. Located north of Los Veneros.
La Caleta
This is a popular spot for surfing in Riviera Nayarit. It is known for awesome deep water peak, a perfect left break and long surf rides. Located near Chacala, an hour and a half from Punta Custodio, It can be reached by boat.
Matanchen Bay
It is known for having the longest and most manageable waves in the world, it has a long straight break over a sandy bottom. Some surfers have ridden the wave forwell over a mile.
Las Rocas (The Rocks)
Breakouts are more frequent and it offers a wonderful break to the right. Located on the outer point of Matanchen Bay.
Lolas
It offers waves with a long left break and unforgettable tunnels. It isn’t crowded and offers stunning surfing at a regional class level. The barrel surfing is good here. Located north of San Blas and although it’s a touch remote, it can easily accessed by Panga boat by way of San Blas.
Las Islitas
It was once some of the longest waves in the world, it has a record-breaking 5,700-foot surfable wave documented in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is known for its unusually long surf break. It is a secluded beach that offers good surfing conditions during the summer.
Playa Borrego
This long wide beach, is bordered by tall coconut palm trees and it has moderate tides, long low waves, and a soft sand bottom. It has a right wave break. Not the best waves in the region but fun.There is a nice estuary on the south side of the beach.
