It is considered one of "the 13 Natural Wonders of Mexico" and is an authentic jewel of nature.

This spectacular landmark is a canyon with walls lined by polygonal columns wich range from 30 m (98 ft) to 50 m (164 ft) in height with five or six sides each. It is so amazing that looks precisely cut by a giant hand.

The basalt columns are made of igneous rock, known as prismatic basalt, and were formed by the accelerated cooling of lava more than two million years ago.

You will marvel as several cascades elegantly falls over the columns into the river, which makes the landscape much more spectacular.

The Prussian naturalist Baron Alexander von Humboldt, visited Mexico at the beginning of the 19th century and was impressed by the beauty of these prisms and became one of the first people to promote the waterfall and rock formations. The landmark’s extraordinary polygonal shapes have drawn comparisons to California’s Devil’s Postpile and Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway.

The natural canyon has been modified by the addition of stairs, observation decks, walkways, and hanging bridges for easier access.

You can cross a suspension bridge of almost 40 m (130 ft) to see the prisms from above or descend a staircase to take photos. There are also visit areas that allow you to stand on the columns and walk across stones embedded into the river beneath the cascade. Look for the rainbows created at the bottom of the ravine when the sun’s rays reflect in the waterfall.

Take part in the adventure activities available in the area, such as a thrilling zip-line course, ride on horseback amid the beautiful forests of the surrounding countryside or learn about local mythology on a guided boat tour of nearby San Antonio Dam.

There is an ecotourism center with cabins, playground, sports courts, pool, camping area, grills, and restaurants.
