This monolith is considered the third largest in the world, with a height of 350 meters. It is a lava formation resulting from a volcanic eruption 8.7 million years ago.
It was a sacred site for both the Chichimeca and Otomi cultures. Every May 4th, descendants of these cultures perform a procession to reach the top of the rock. This tradition stems from the belief that on the top, the ancient Chichimecas worshiped a pre-Hispanic cross carved in stone with a circle in the center until the arrival of the Spaniards, who placed a different cross brought from Europe.
The cross changed, but not its meaning, so they continue to climb carrying a wooden cross that weighs approximately 85 kilograms. The last 45 meters, are practically vertical so it is very difficult to climb.
It is a tradition that has been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Peña de Bernal has become a challenge for adventure lovers and offers four climbing routes and challenges such as a rappel of up to 60 meters. If you're not into adrenaline, there is a trail, but it only goes halfway. If you want to continue, you'll need the assistance of a guide and special equipment as the slope becomes almost vertical.
Upon reaching the top of the monolith, you'll have an unparalleled panoramic view of the Sierra Gorda.
