This beautiful strip of the Pacific has important nesting beaches for four of the seven species of sea turtles in the world.

The turtle species that arrive at Puerto Escondido are: brown (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea).Chelonia mydas), carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), laúd (Dermochelys coriacea) y golfina (Lepidochelys olivacea).

One of the turtle sanctuaries is Playa Escobilla, near Puerto Escondido.

There are also several turtle camps such as the Barra de la Cruz Tortuguero Camp and the Morro Ayuta Tortuguero Camp. However, the most important in the area is the Mexican Turtle Center in Mazunte, which has many nearby attractions such as the Tonameca Lagoon, an extensive mangrove swamp habitat for a wide variety of birds and crocodiles.

In Playa Bacocho, the volunteers work day and night to protect the turtles. A big part of the job is collecting turtle eggs and providing a secure environment for them until they’re ready to hatch. Then the magic starts when is time to release the little turtles, some of them have just minutes old and you can help them to get to the ocean, an unforgettable experience.
