The coast of Oaxaca is one of the regions with the richest diversity in Mexico, since there are around 2,157 species of flora and fauna.
This beautiful strip of the Pacific has important nesting beaches for four of the seven species of sea turtles in the world: brown (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea).Chelonia mydas), carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), laúd (Dermochelys coriacea) y golfina (Lepidochelys olivacea).
There are other places where you can observe and learn more about turtles such as Lagunas de Chacahua and Parque Nacional Huatulco.
There are so many sea turtles laying eggs on this stretch of the Pacific coast, you can actually seen nestings in front of your hotel.
The official sea turtle nesting period for olive ridley turtles in Huatulco takes place between August and December.
Another option is to take a tour to the Mazunte Turtle Center, located on the site of a former turtle processing factory. To get there you will take a boat tour in the mangroves of La Ventanilla. In the farm you will be able to witness these giant creatures.
