Mil Cascadas (Thousand Waterfalls)
One of the best adventures that can be experienced in the surroundings of Taxco is to explore Las Granadas river, also known as Mil Cascadas, since it has various waterfalls that run in a ravine between the mountains. Located 40 minutes from Taxco.
The trail is approximately four kilometers long and takes from four to six hours depending on weather conditions and the size and experience of the group, since it involves rappelling, jumping in waterfalls, swimming in pools and caving.
The journey is made in the middle of exuberant vegetation where you can see colorful spiders, hundreds of butterflies and many other animals. It begins by crossing a stream to enter a cavern called Gruta Las Granadas, which is recommended to explore, since it has an underground river 150 m (492 ft) deep. Later on, you swim in several pools of the river and you can enjoy various waterfalls that go down the slopes to form small turquoise pools into which you have to jump from different heights ranging from 2 to 10 m (7 to 33 ft). The journey continues until you reach the largest waterfall where you can rappel 35 m (115 ft) high.
Located 40 minutes from Taxco on the free highway that leads to Amacuzac.
Pozas Azules de Atzala (Blue Pools)
This is a very good option to practice canyoning. It consists of a stream that runs down between rocky walls creating turquoise pools into which you can jump from heights ranging from 3 to 7 m (10 to 23 ft), until you reach a rappel of more than 20 m (7 to 65 ft). If you want to enjoy the waterfalls and pools in their fullness, it is advisable to visit it in rainy weather, or if you prefer to enjoy a dry rappel, it is better to visit it on dry days.
