New Year's Eve

Date: December 31

Location: Nationwide

This is a celebration that gathers family and friends for dinner. Typically, sparkling wine is served, and just at midnight, the 12 grapes are consumed, which, according to tradition, should be eaten one with each bell toll, representing the 12 wishes for the coming year.

Some families also carry out other traditions such as eating or scattering lentils for abundance, sweeping out of the house to remove the bad from the ending year, or taking out suitcases for a year filled with travel.

There are communities that have preserved some ancestral traditions, such as the young Zoques in Oaxaca, who dress as "huehues" (old people) to burn the old year and start the celebration. Among the Tzotziles and Tzeltales of Chiapas, there is a “Change of the Staff” of the civil and religious authorities of the towns. For the Maya, it is common to renew household utensils at the change of the cycle.
