It is one of the oldest cities in Tabasco, founded in 1531.

It has a rich history since it has been declared the capital of the state three times, the first time from 1677 to 1795.

This picturesque town offers a pleasant main square where the Church of the Virgin of the Assumption is located, built in the early 18th century. This church has survived the flooding of the river and the religious persecution of Governor Tomás Garrido.
