Ixtapa – Zihuatanejo has many places to practice surfing, there are options for beginners and experienced surfers.

BEST SURFING SPOTS IN IXTAPA – ZIHUATANEJO

Playa Linda

This river rock beach has quite reliable surf and can work at any time of the year. It is suitable for both short and longboards.

There is a great amount of spots including both lefts and rights, with a long left at the end. The normal length is from 50-meter (164 feet) to 150-meter (492 feet). It breaks all year round and has sandy bottom. You don't need to be a very experienced surfer to enjoy the waves here, this is a common spot for surfing lessons.

Las Escolleras

Escolleras is Ixtapa’s most iconic wave located at the end of Ixtapa beach in the hotel zone, in front of the Marina Ixtapa. This sandy bottom beach is a great spot for both surfers.

This wave is a right-hander and surfable all day. The wedge gets mucho barrels and rails and it can hold a sizeable swell. You can get a good ride but there are many closeouts and currents. Its length is usually less than 50-meter (164 feet), although there are times that it reaches up to 150-meter (492 feet).

Barrio Nuevo

It is located 3 km north of Playa Linda. It breaks left and is very powerful with a tube at certain times of the year.

This rocky bottom beach is the ideal place for experienced surfers.

Surf in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo

Playa Pantla

It is located 20 km north of Zihuatanejo, at the mouth of the Pantla River. Left tip, smooth wall and breaks all year. The bottom is sandy.

Troncones Point

It is located 30 km north of Zihuatanejo and breaks all year round, however the waves grow during the summer. Works best in offshore winds from the northeast.

With a depth of about 6 to 10 feet, there is a left breaking point, and a fair amount of good waves that go on for yards and yards.

It has several beach-breaks along the beach. Strong wave and occasionally with a tube, with a normal length of 50 to 150 m, but reaching a maximum of 300 m. The north tip is a left. It breaks on a reef, sometimes with a tube and then a smooth wall.

This is the point where Troncones and Manzanillo meet and is considered one of the best places in the world for surfing. It is recommended for experts as there are many rocks. Relatively few surfers here, even on good days.

 

Manzanillo

It is located 32 km north of Zihuatanejo and is an exposed reef and point break that is often working.

Works best in offshore winds from the northeast. The best swell direction is from the southwest. There is a left breaking point here.

It very rarely gets crowded here and works all around the year.

La Saladita

It is located 20 minutes north from Zihuatanejo, passing Troncones.

Its ideal swell size would be head-high to double overhead and it is perfect for longboarding.

Offshore winds are from the northeast and the break here is a left hand point.

This rocky bottom beach is one of the places with the most stable conditions in the area, so you can surf all day almost every day of the year, which is why it is known as the “Wave Machine”.

It is a good place for beginners, but this beach tends to be crowded weeklong.

Playa El Rancho

It is located 56 km north of Zihuatanejo and is known as one of the finest waves in Guerrero with a multifold of sections and long lefts, preferring short boards. The perfect swell is equal to that of La Saladita’s. Offshore winds blow from the northeast and the best swell direction is from the southwest.

The left tip is the best area. The waves are fast, powerful and break all year round, although the best season is summer. It is a rocky bottom beach. Surfing here means negotiating dangerous rips.

 

Playa Majahua

It is located 3 km north of Troncones. Reef tip with medium and long wall. Beach breaks are coral bottom.

Playa Lagunillas

It is located almost 8 km from Troncones. It is a left and right river mouth with a smooth and mediun wall. Beach breaks are sandy bottom.

Playa Las Gatas,

It is located in the southern part of the Zihuatanejo Bay. Left tip with a reef bottom. This unexposed beach breaks few times each year, demanding a large swell. The wave is fast, powerful with a length of 150 to 300 m and great for shortboards.

The best season is in summer when strong waves and tube waves are formed. It is recommended for experienced surfers.

Barra de Potosí

It is located 20 km south of Zihuatanejo. It is an exposed reef and point break. The left is long in point but not very consistent.

Offshore winds are from the north northeast. Tends to receive distant groundswells and the ideal swell direction is from the southwest.

It very rarely gets crowded here. Watch out for rips and rocks.

Barra de Petatlán

It is located 30 km south of Zihuatanejo. With strong left and right waves. It is not consistent all year long.

Loma Bonita

It is located 45 km south of Zihuatanejo. The waves are hollow, fast and powerful. The bottom is sandy and is recommended for experienced surfers.

Juluchuca

It is located 40 km south of Zihuatanejo. Beach break with medium wall from strong to soft. Tubes are formed in autumn.

Petacalco

It has the biggest wave in the area with perfect and giant tubes.

Summer offers the favoured conditions for surfing. Ideal winds are from the north northwest.

Watch out for rips, sharks and stingrays.
