It is located in the municipality of Villa de Zaragoza, in the Central region, south of the state capital, and stands out for its formations and pleasant climate. It has been considered a Protected Natural Area since 2019.
The mountainous region has a humid air and a forested landscape, resulting in a cool and temperate climate.
There are trails for walking through beautiful landscapes, especially in areas known as "Las Rusias," "El Milagro," and "San Francisco," which are populated with pine, oak, and eucalyptus forests that combine with peaceful streams.
In the vicinity of the Sierra de Álvarez, you can explore a complex of caves and caverns that, although not as spectacular as the natural wonders of the Huasteca Potosina, offer great challenges for spelunking and rappelling enthusiasts.
There are more than 100 natural cavities in the region, among which the Resumidero de Borbollón with a depth of 678 meters and the Sótano del Puerto de los Lobos with 202 meters stand out. Both cavities have vertical drops of 200 meters.
The region offers ecotourism hotels and ranch activities.
