Its name is due to the fact that on its banks there are huge juniper trees with their roots inside the riverbed. The effect that its branches make reflecting in its waters give it a very unique beauty. 

This river is an icon of the state of Coahuila, since it is one of the few rivers that cross this state with abundant flow. It crosses the Bustamante and Morena mountains and passes through the towns of Bustamante and Villaldama, to reach Sabinas Hidalgo.
